Everybody knows Shakespeare’s tragedy; the story of the Moorish general and his beautiful sweetheart, Desdemona. Verdi subordinated every tune to the dramatic situation of the plot when he was composing this opera. Perhaps this is the reason why music historians consider Otello to be one of the finest works of the maestro.
The worlwide success followed its first performace at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan, in 1887.
